Pittsburgh Steelers Announce Medical Retirement of CB Ryan Watts : Ryan Watts Injury Update

PITTSBURGH, PA — April 28, 2025 — The Pittsburgh Steelers have made the difficult decision to release second-year cornerback Ryan Watts, who will medically retire at age 23 due to a neck injury sustained during the 2024 preseason, the team announced Monday.

Watts, a promising talent selected in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL Draft out of Texas, suffered the injury in Pittsburgh’s final preseason game against the Detroit Lions last summer. The setback sidelined him for his entire rookie season. After thorough consultations with the Steelers’ medical staff, external experts, and Watts’ representatives, the organization determined that retiring from football is in the best interest of his long-term health.
