📢 Trump Extends TikTok Ban Deadline by Another 90 Days, Giving ByteDance More Time to Sell the App

In a surprising move that extends the ongoing TikTok saga in the United States, former President Donald Trump has officially granted ByteDance another 90 days to sell the popular short-form video app to a U.S.-based buyer.

Trump made the announcement on Truth Social Thursday evening, confirming that the new deadline for the sale is now September 17, 2025.

I’ve just signed the Executive Order extending the Deadline for the TikTok closing for 90 days. Thank you for your attention to this matter!” Trump wrote.

🔄 Third Extension of the TikTok Sale Deadline

This marks the third time the TikTok deadline has been extended, showing just how complicated the negotiations between ByteDance (TikTok’s Chinese parent company) and the U.S. government have become. While the Trump administration is firm on ensuring TikTok is sold, the clock is ticking as ByteDance has not yet finalized any deal.

🇨🇳 China’s Role Still Crucial in the TikTok Deal

While speaking aboard Air Force One Wednesday, Trump hinted that Chinese President Xi Jinping would likely have to approve any final sale. Since ByteDance is based in Beijing, any decision on the app’s future may still require approval from the Chinese government.

“I think President Xi will support a deal,” Trump said, expressing hope that negotiations could move forward with cooperation from Beijing.

🗣️ TikTok Responds, Thanks Trump Administration

TikTok issued a public statement thanking Trump for his leadership and for keeping the platform alive in the U.S.

“We are grateful for President Trump’s leadership and support in ensuring that TikTok continues to be available for more than 170 million American users and 7.5 million U.S. businesses,” the statement read.

The company also confirmed it is continuing to work with Vice President JD Vance’s office on a possible deal.

📉 TikTok Ban Support Weakening, Says Pew

According to a recent Pew Research Center survey, public support for banning TikTok has been declining. In fact, when the platform briefly went dark earlier this year under the Biden-era TikTok ban, users quickly turned to RedNote, another Chinese social media app. However, TikTok saw users return once Trump’s team allowed operations to resume temporarily.

🛒 Potential TikTok Buyers in the Race

Several major tech names have expressed interest in acquiring TikTok to keep it running legally in the U.S. Among them:

  • Amazon made a last-minute bid.

  • Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian teamed up with billionaire investor Frank McCourt to throw their hats into the ring as potential buyers of TikTok.

  • Perplexity AI, a rising AI-powered search engine startup, entered the race.

  • Steven Mnuchin, Trump’s former Treasury Secretary, also expressed interest in purchasing the app.

However, after new tariffs were introduced against China by the Trump administration, potential negotiations cooled down, and no deal was finalized.

🔐 National Security Still a Concern

The root of the ongoing TikTok U.S. ban debate is national security. Both the Biden and Trump administrations have raised concerns about the security of American user data, especially if handled by a China-based company like ByteDance.

TikTok has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing, stating that U.S. user data is not stored in China and that the platform is committed to transparency and safety.

⚖️ Supreme Court Backs Law Requiring U.S. Sale

The U.S. Supreme Court recently agreed with a law made during Biden’s presidency, which says ByteDance has to sell TikTok to an American company if it wants the app to keep running in the U.S.

ByteDance, however, has not confirmed any decision on selling and remains mostly silent on its next move.

📝 Final Thoughts: TikTok’s Future Still Uncertain

While Trump’s extension gives ByteDance a new 90-day lifeline, the company is under increasing pressure to act fast. With over 170 million TikTok users in the U.S., the outcome of this decision will have a massive impact—not just on the app’s future, but also on the businesses, influencers, and advertisers who rely on it.

Stay tuned for further updates as the TikTok U.S. sale deadline approaches once again.
